YES- she was alerted to the fire by a working smoke alarm

Incident Synopsis

An elderly lady was alerted by a smoke alarm to a fire in her home. She quickly called the CFD 911 communication center just before 10:00 am, Monday morning and was able to escape. When members of the CFD arrived they reported heavy smoke conditions pouring out of this 1-story condo at the “Carmel South Condominiums” located just off of Carmel Road. No injuries were reported and damages were estimated by fire officials were set between $150-200K. No other units were damaged. The Charlotte Fire Investigation Task Force responded and ruled this to be an accidental fire. Investigators determined the cause to be combustible materials stored to close to the hot water heater and eventually ignited. The fire began in the storage room near the kitchen, however did not spread to any other units.
